Laura

Welcome to Big Fat Positive with Shanna and Laura. This week, we have our weekly check-ins. We have our special segment, Why Is My Kid Crying, where we find out why someone was pouting at a pool party and why someone was sobbing at school and we close with our BFPs and BFNs for the week. Let's get started. Hi, everyone. Welcome to episode 302. Hi, Shanna. Ah, top of the morning to ya. OK. Is it St. Patrick's Day?

Shanna

Yeah. My check-in has to do with St. Patty's Day. So, you know, I had to bust out my Irish accent.

Laura

Very good. You lived in Ireland for a period of time. Am I correct?

Shanna

Yeah, I studied abroad there for like six months, and yeah, I loved it.

Laura

Yeah, I can't do an Irish accent, so I'm not going to subject our listeners to it, but I would love to hear your check in.

Shanna

All right, so St. Patty's Day was this weekend, and that holiday is not really on my radar. anymore. You know, when I was younger, it was really fun. I had like this connection to Ireland, and I would go to a bar and drink green beer and all that jazz. As a parent, it doesn't mean a lot to me. But this year, my girls were like, Mama, St. Patty's Day is coming up. And I'm like, Oh, it is. And they said, we want to make leprechaun traps and set them out and see if the leprechaun comes. And I was like, Excuse me, like record scratch. Who did what now? Because this was like the day before St. Patrick's Day. And they were like scheming to do all of this and set it out that night and all this stuff. And I was like, is St. Patrick's Day a thing nowadays with kids? You know, things have changed a bit since we were younger. And maybe it is.

I know that at their school last year, Elle made a leprechaun trap, which by the way, I don't love this concept of this leprechaun trap, right? Like, Why have we got trapped this little guy? Anyway.

Laura

Yeah, this is completely new, right? Like, no one did this when we were kids. Am I wrong?

Shanna

I didn't. I would love to know from listeners if they did that when they were kids.

Laura

Yeah, maybe it was a regional thing and it's just gone national because of the internet. So last year she was introduced to the concept of a leprechaun trap and this year she wanted to do one.

Shanna

Yeah, so they wanted to do one on their own at home as a craft. And I always encouraged crafts. I was like, sure, let's do it. So we made this craft and as we're doing it, it became very clear to me that they thought that the leprechaun was actually going to come go into their traps and leave them a little something. So I was unsure of what I'm supposed to do here. So I went to my trusty parenting group online and put out a post. I was like, Hey, what are we all doing these days for St. Patrick's Day? And I got a variety of answers from cultural celebrations. That's what some people do. Some people do have like the imaginary leprechaun leave little toys for their kids, two answers like quote, free yourself of the leprechaun mental load.

Some people were just eschewing at St. Patrick's Day completely. And I was like, OK, so it's not a huge thing. I don't think my girls are going to expect like Santa Claus or Easter Bunny level items here. I'll just see if I can find a little something to leave them. So I went to Rite Aid because I needed to pick up a prescription and I sauntered over to the candy aisle and I happened to find some gold coins. and Pez dispensers that had Care Bears with little shamrocks on the tummy. Oh, cute. So I was like, oh, that sounds cute. That's perfect. So I just got that. And I left that out for them. So in the morning, they discovered those. Laura, they lost their mind over this. They loved it. Did they? Cece didn't stop talking all day about it. She's like, I cannot wait for St. Patrick's Day again next year.

Laura

I was like, wow, OK, that's cool. All right, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Interesting. This didn't happen at our house. I put the boys in some matching shamrock shirts that my mom had gotten them last year that were like way too big last year and still are way too big. So we're going to get at least a third year of them if I can remember where they are next year. And that was it. That was the end of it. Corey like barely wore green. I was like, Corey, come on, you got to like try a little. To be fair, he does have a red-green color deficiency.

Green is not his strong suit. But yeah, we didn't do the whole leprechaun thing. And I have to say I'm a little worried about my voice finding out about it because my mental load is full. The mental load of laundry is overstuffed and struggling to get through its cycle. Well, friend, free yourself of the leprechaun mental load. I did without even knowing.

Shanna

You did. You did. But how cute that they loved it. Yeah, they really did. It was really cute. Some other ideas I got from the group was like, I have to leprechaun do little pranks, like die the toilet water green or leave footsteps. And for like a hot second, I was like, oh, that'd be fun. Maybe I'll do that. And I'm like, no, no, no, like let's keep it basic. So I didn't do any pranks or anything.

Laura

Also, let's remember how your girls responded to the Elf on a Shelf stuff. Like they didn't care about the big elaborate stuff, right? They just like the concept of it.

Shanna

Yeah, true. True. So you can still bring the magic while keeping it small. That's the lesson we learn here.

Laura

All I know is that I don't like going out like in public on St. Patrick's Day because I have artificially dyed red hair, but it's apparently pretty convincing because a lot of people think it's real. And all I get all day is, you must be Irish. And I'm just like, I don't know, dude. Yeah, sure. Do you want to see my 23 and me? It says there's some Irish in there, I guess.

Shanna

Well, that's enough. You can claim it and be like, ah, yes, yes, I am.

Laura

I have been to Ireland, so there's that.

Shanna

There you go. There you go. All right, well that was the extent of our excitement this week. What about you? What's going on over there?

Laura

Okay, so we had kind of an unconventional St. Patrick's Day, I'd say. And that's because this year it fell on a Sunday and there was no school event. Usually I would anticipate any activities happening around a more minor holiday. to be at school thing right like at school they're gonna color in shamrocks or whatever and we'll call it a day. But there was no school so I was like you know what it's a beautiful day let's see if there's anything going on in the community to see if there's any activities like a St. Patrick's Day parade or a little gathering at the library where kids can you know color in shamrocks or whatever. And I'm looking at the local calendars and stuff and I spy something that isn't quite St. Patrick's Day related, but was something I knew the kids would absolutely love. What is that?

That was a cherry blossom festival at a Japanese garden near us up in Brandt Park in Glendale. Ooh, I love cherry blossom trees. They're so beautiful when they bloom. They are I have to say there was like one at this place. It was very small. So it was less about the cherry blossom trees. I was expecting like a whole bunch of cherry blossom trees. But it was more about like Japanese culture and celebrating various Japanese things. So there were a bunch of organizations that came together to participate in the festival. They were like Japanese food trucks and a like a sumo demonstration and a kimono show and stuff like that. How fun. Yeah. And the reason why I knew Augie was going to freaking love this is that right now he is pretty obsessed by East Asian culture. Ninjas and Samurai are the main culprits for this.

He loves someone who looks super cool in a mask and a sword fighting bad guys. And to be fair, he's having a little trouble distinguishing between what's Chinese and what's Japanese. But I think that's fair for a five-year-old. It's hard for adults who don't really study these things to know the difference between Japanese writing and Chinese writing. So he gets them confused a lot. So he was sort of like, oh, this looks just like China. And I was like, it's Japan. It's Japan. We're at a Japanese festival right now. But it's really sweet. And he really has a very earnest appreciation of it. really, really wants to learn about writing in Chinese and Japanese characters. So much so that at home, he'll ask me to print out Chinese language preschool workbooks. The way you practice letters where you trace the letter, he's trying to do that with Chinese characters.

Shanna

Oh, that's so cool. Is he using, like, what kind of writing utensil does he use for that?

Laura

He's just using a marker, you know? I'm not trying to, like, I don't know if our listeners ever, if I've ever mentioned this, but I took a couple years of Chinese, of Mandarin in college, so I know a little bit. Like, it's very, very rusty, but I still know, like, stroke order and how to read, like, really, really basic. Chinese so I could help him a little bit with it but like I'm not getting real nitpicky about like stroke order and how it looks I'm just trying to make sure he enjoys it you know. So we all packed up on St. Patrick's Day and the kids in their shamrock shirts and me and my bright green shirt to go to the Japanese cherry blossom festival.

Shanna

And Korean is brown shirt.

Laura

Yes indeed and my mom was there too and we had so much fun as predicted The boys really loved it. I'll send you a few pictures. We're not going to dwell on them because I know our listeners can't see them. But when we first got there, there was a booth that was doing calligraphy demonstrations where you could do your own character drawing on rice paper, basically. And we had to drag Augie away from this kicking and screaming. He wanted to dominate this booth. I mean, he would have been there the whole time if we had let him. And then the other really cool thing is that they had a martial arts presentation by the Kitano Sensei group. I guess. And it was a bunch of like adults and kids doing sword martial arts. And they were doing it with real swords and also with like bamboo sticks. And this child was transfixed the whole time. It was so cool.

Shanna

Oh, wow. That's so neat.

Laura

Let me just show you his face, his expression as we were watching it.

Shanna

Oh, he is laser focused.

Laura

He is into it. How cool. Did you notice he has his little notebook out? He was like pretending to take notes on it. So cute.

Shanna

Oh, I love him. I love it.

Laura

But yeah, that was our St. Patrick's Day. We did not expect to end up at a Japanese festival, but it was super fun. And if you're in the Glendale area, look for it next year. It was really fun.

Shanna

Yeah, I'll have to catch it next year, because that does sound really, really cool.

Laura

But anyway, that's it for me. I do have more to talk about, but I thought I would talk about it in the next segment. What do you think? Ooh, let's do it.

Shanna

We're back, and this week's special segment is Why Is My Kid Crying, where we talk about the possibly unexpected reasons that our kids have been crying lately. And as always, this is not an opportunity to laugh at our children, shame them for their feelings, or any of the above. It's to talk about the reason behind the feelings. So Laura, you are up first. We turn this into a game, if I remember. So you tell me who this involved, where it happened. And I want to take my best guess at why this child was crying.

Laura

Okay. So this is Augie. It's... I'll give you a time. It was 10.50 a.m. and it's at school. Oh. His school, I should say.

Shanna

Okay. Not a random community college in the neighborhood.

Laura

I've enrolled for my PhD. Did I not tell you? Just kidding.

Shanna

I wish. Okay. So I'm assuming you weren't there. You got a message or a note about it. 10.50 a.m., I'm thinking that might be, it's like before lunch, so he's probably really hungry, maybe hangry, and he's got really upset because someone copied his Lego gun structure, and he wanted to maintain that intellectual property for himself.

Laura

So close. No, just kidding. That's way off. Actually, what if I told you I was there, Shanna? Oh, okay. I'm sure that would change your guess. Plot twist. So let me just tell you. Okay, so the scene is that it was Augie's very first school jogathon this week. And we've been low key fundraising for it for a couple weeks. Like we sent it to the grandparents and I posted once or twice on Facebook, but very, you know, not begging a lot of people because as much as I'd love his school to get money, I know we all have donation fatigue. And this is just not a priority in my life right now. So we got a decent amount of donations. He raised a good amount of money, mostly thanks to the grandparents, but also some like actually really interestingly, I tagged my mom in the Facebook posts that I made about it and a bunch of her friends and

Parents of her former patients and stuff donated because they love my mom so much. I'm like, wow. I know. Hot tip, tag the grandparents. Tag the grandparents. I mean, a bunch of people I don't even know. They're just like, oh, I'm friends with your mom. I'm like, oh, cool. OK.

If anyone's listening who donated, thank you so much. That was so sweet. So anyway, he was super excited about his jogathon. It was just gonna be 15 solid minutes of running for the kids, which is actually quite a bit of running, right? Like in a circle? in a circle on their little lawn play area because his school is actually just TK through first on the campus he's at so like they have a kind of smallish play area like it's fake grass and they run around I mean it was fine it was a perfectly fine loop for tiny little kids but it was just really kind of dizzying. To watch them run and part of the deal was they needed parents to volunteer for various things like manning the merch booth and counting the laps and all that stuff so I volunteered to count laps and my mom happened to be in town as I mentioned and she wanted to come help to so she helped count laps and then.

sharing my mother-in-law also came which was awesome and she came and i don't think she expected to be roped into counting laps like i think she thought she was just gonna. Cheer on but we wrote her into the word enough people so all of us are there quarry to counting laps. as Augie does his run. And he was so excited to see us and he ran. He ran his heart out. And my little gripe is that I didn't dress him that morning, Corey did. And Corey put him in like kind of a hot long sleeve shirt, which I don't think I would have chosen for the jogathon, but I wasn't involved. And so I didn't notice until we got there. And I was like, oh man, he's going to be hot, but what can you do? I guess worst case scenario, he takes his shirt off. Well, he ran his heart out. We were cheering him on the whole time. It was very fun. There were a lot of parents and supporters there.

I'm going to send you a quick picture from after so you can see how happy he is and also one of him just standing and you can sort of see how he looks after.

Shanna

Okay, so it's a whole family there. He looks extremely happy and very proud of himself. Love it. All right, this next picture, little boy looks hot. He's got pink cheeks. He looks a little zoned out. Like maybe he could use a glass of water. Did he get hot running in that long-sleeve shirt, Laura?

Laura

I think he did. And this is not to throw quarry under the bus. It was actually a cold day, but with all the running, he was hot. But this boy also to me just looks tired, like bone tired. You know, usually he is bouncing off the walls. And this face is like ready to go to sleep, Augie. Like that's the face I see when he's ready to pass out at bedtime. So anyway, here's the other thing about Jogathon. They make an announcement to everyone, including the kids, that says something like, okay, parents, if you're going to be taking your kids home now, you need to sign them out at the office before you go. Huh? Why would anyone take their kid home at 10.30 AM?

Good question shanna good question because that's what we thought we're like no way this isn't this is not a good plan we have shit to do right on a Tuesday or whatever like no we're not taking you home and we had already prepped and we're like we just want you to know. You're gonna run your jogathon. You're gonna see us and then we're gonna go home and you're gonna stay at school and you'll be at school with your friends and it'll be great blah blah blah, right? Apparently we had not prepped him well enough Shanna because the combination of us leaving him being exhausted all of it just made him melt down.

Shanna

Oh no

Laura

So I actually stuck around to count the next group of kids because they had to do it in groups, because there weren't enough parents to count the laps. So I stuck around to count the laps and Corey had like gone off and come back and been like, oh, he's pretty upset that he's not going home. And I was thinking, oh, okay, you know, he's upset, whatever, like he'll get over it. After the other kids run another 15 minutes, I have to get to a doctor's appointment. I'm like running late for a doctor's appointment that I had like snuck in with a cancellation, you know, like otherwise it was going to be like months before I could see this doctor. And I was like, okay, I'm rushing out. And as I'm leaving, I see him sort of by the front gate. Absolutely. sobbing. I mean, just the saddest little boy. And he has like a teacher's aid next to him trying to help him out.

And it kind of broke my heart, Shanna, because I was just like, oh, this boy is so sad. Like it's not the crying to kind of persuade you to take him home thing. It wasn't like the half-hearted crying. I mean, he was so upset.

Shanna

Were there other kids upset too that they couldn't leave?

Laura

Not to his level. I mean, there were a couple others that I saw kind of being upset, like his little friend that he went to preschool with that was at the school too. His parents said, oh yeah, it was a little hard to leave, but he was excited to do whatever, the next lesson with class. But not Augie. He was so bereft. And I gave him a big hug and a kiss. I'm like, I have to go. And he like did that thing where he's like clinging to me and not wanting me to leave. I later find out, like I rushed, I got to my doctor's appointment just in time. But I later found out from Corey that this went on for like a half hour.

Like he was so upset and sherry is probably listening right now sherry told me she's like I thought we should have just taken him home and we're like but we have so much to do and like we told him anyway poor baby he was so so sad but also I'm just like come on school like don't set this expectation. Parents have to work.

Shanna

Honestly, you should send an email to the principal with a little suggestion for next year's jogathon about that.

Laura

I know. I know. And it's like most kids were staying, I feel like. So I don't know. Yeah. But how did he fare the rest of the day? Did he come home happy? He came home and fell asleep the minute he got to the couch. And then the next day stayed home with flu-like symptoms. I'm like, did he get heat stroke? Oh, no, poor buddy. And then he was fine the next day. So I'm like, oh, maybe we gave the kid a heat stroke or he had like a 24 hour virus or something. But you know what? He got his wish because he stayed home all the next day.

Shanna

Yep. Yep. Worked out in his favor.

Laura

Oh, poor guy. Anyway, I should I want to make sure everyone knows that we gave him lots of water like he was he was okay. But he was just very sad. So anyway, that was an unexpected turn for that day. And that was why Augie was crying. Yes, understandable. Yeah. But now I want to hear your story, Shanna. Are you going to give me the scenario?

Shanna

All righty. This involves CeCe and it's in the bathroom at a pool party. CeCe in the bathroom at a pool party.

Laura

Hmm. I know I have cried in the bathroom at pool parties more than once, but usually that was an adolescence. I do remember getting my period once as a teenager and that causing me to cry because I was at a pool party. I don't think poor CeCe is there yet. No, not yet. Okay. She's crying because The pool wasn't cold enough for her and she wanted to freeze her butt off in the pool and because she's used to extremely freezing pools and that pool was just too hot for her.

Shanna

She is used to our very cold above ground pool that we set up in the summers, surely. But no, that's not it. This is actually a while ago, and it was actually at your pool party, which you had last year at like a swim plea thing where you rented someone's pool so we could all get together and celebrate your birthday. Remember that?

Laura

I do remember that. Yeah, for a second, I was like, when did I own a pool? But yes, that one time for my birthday, we did that. That was fun.

Shanna

Yeah, it was super fun. So I went into the bathroom with Ellen Cici to go potty, and we go in there and Cici stops and looks at the toilet. And I'm like, what? And she's like, what is that? And I look, and the toilet has a bidet attached to it. Oh. And I'm like, that is a bidet. It's like, you know, washes your bum. And I explained to her what it was. And she was not having it. She was like, no, I can't use that potty. I'm like, honey, it's like, you don't have to use the bidet. You don't have to turn it on. You don't have to do anything. But like the way it's stuck out on the side, like the edges of the toilet and it's got knobs. And I think it had like a light or something. And then of course like the little sprayer tube is in the toilet. I think all of it just felt really like weird and scary to her and not familiar.

Like this is the girl who like does not like automatic flushers in public bathrooms, right? Or you know, stuff like that. So I was like, I mean, it's okay. Like just sit on the potty and you know, it's fine. Uh-uh, girls started crying because she was so scared to use this toilet with a bidet on it.

Laura

Poor little thing. I mean, maybe she, I could totally see being afraid that it was gonna like poke you or something. It is a little, I have to say, weird for me. When I go to someone else's house and they have a bidet in the guest bathroom, is it just me? Because there's just something very intimate about it.

Shanna

Yeah, yeah. I don't know if I'd want to use someone else's bidet sprayer. I'm sure it's fine. I don't know. I'm coming from a place of complete bidet ignorance. I don't know anything about it. And so is she, right? And she's just like, what is that monster on the body?

Laura

Oh yeah. Poor thing. So did she ever pee or like what happened? Is this where we find out she peed in the pool that day?

Shanna

Our birthday present to you is that you got to swim and pee. No, the solution was what I've often done in public restrooms with her when she's scared of big toilets. I sit on the back of it like we're writing a horse double saddle style, you know, I scoot all the way back and she sits in front of me and and peace. So I kind of like sat and like hid the bidet and everything. And she was able to use the front part of the potty. And so yeah, she was able to get over it.

Laura

No, that's good. I did not know anything about that. You shielded us from all that information at the time.

Shanna

I did.

Laura

I was saving it for the right moment, which is now, almost one year later.

Shanna

It is almost my birthday. I know. I know. So funny. All right. What is your next? Why is my kid crying?

Laura

Okay. So this one is Sebastian and it is on the couch while watching YouTube. Ooh, okay.

Shanna

Gosh, YouTube can create so many emotions for kids. Let's see. Okay, I think Sebastian was probably in a moment of elation watching one of those videos where the disembodied hands come in and unwrap toys and stuff. And you came in and realized he was watching that and you're like, no, no, honey, let's watch something else instead. And you switched it and he lost his shit.

Laura

I mean, that has happened before with both my kids, but that did not happen this time. So I will say that our new version of disembodied hands playing with toys is freaking Minecraft videos. It's just like watching other people play Minecraft, which is just very annoying to me, but whatever. But no, we were watching some video. I don't remember what it was. Sebastian really likes watching Michael Jackson videos like music videos. So it might have been that. But the distinct thing about YouTube is that we don't pay for YouTube premium. So it's one of the few places they actually see ads in their life. Right? Oh, these children do not see ads very often because they're watching Netflix or Disney plus, whatever. And even if they are ads, they're like usually for like Disney plus has started playing ads, right? But it's like before trailers for other Disney plus things, right?

It's not just like advertising stuff. And I will say that as a result, my kids kind of love the ads, especially when they are targeted towards kids. Like recently, we were watching actual live Nickelodeon to watch SpongeBob because something was going on with our Apple TV. And there's ads, lots of ads. And they're all toy ads. And they were so excited. Sebastian kept being like, I want that. I want that. I want that. And I'm like, yeah, that's the whole point. That's the whole point of the ad.

Shanna

Job well done, marketing team. Job well done.

Laura

Exactly. Exactly. So this is somewhat related. So we're watching something on YouTube and the ad that comes on that we must watch because it's must see TV. We cannot skip is an ad for Disneyland. Oh, you know, come experience the magic of Disney. And it's like, you know, and Sebastian's been there enough times. He's like Disneyland. And I will say like one of the tactics I use to get him to stay on the potty while we were potty training to like continue to poop to like get his poops out is I would hand them my phone on guided access but on the Disneyland app and he would like go around like the app and he would like go around the map and look at all the wait times for things and you're like, oh man, then I'm fucking anyway.

That is such a specific thing. I love it. It really is. I'd be like, babies, you have to poop. He'd be like, no, I'd be like, you want to look at the Disneyland map. Okay, I have poop and you could like go and sit and you want to look at the Disneyland map. Anyway, so he's very familiar with Disneyland, obviously. And this ad comes up and he turns to me after he goes, I won't go Disneyland. And I said, you know what? Yeah, we're actually probably going to go soon because we got some free passes and I think you're Ant and uncle are gonna come down and we're gonna plan a time to go soon. He goes, I won't go to Disneyland now. And I'm like, oh, well, honey, it's 5 p.m. on a Tuesday. I don't think we can go to Disneyland now. Shanna, that was the wrong thing to say. Oh, yes it was, mama. Oh my god, this poor child really wanted to go to Disneyland right now. He was sobbing.

And again, just like with Augie, you know, it was the sobbing, the deep internal hurt. Wanting to go to Disneyland right now. And he's saying in his little lips, I want Disneyland white. And he's sobbing and he's like and he tried by trying to go to comfort him. He's like kind of trying to hit me away like swap me away The child went and put on his shoes shawty

Oh my word. He was ready to go. Just tears streaming down his face. I want Disneyland now. Like, okay, honey, we're not going to Disneyland now. I'm really sorry. I try to remember the thing where it's like, you know, your instinct is to be logical. It's 5 p.m. on a Tuesday. We don't have tickets. We can't go to Disneyland now. We're gonna go to Disneyland another time. You just need to wait a couple weeks, bubble up, whatever it is, right? Yeah. No. It doesn't work. It just makes it way worse. So then I stopped and I was like, you really want to go to Disneyland right now? Yeah. Oh, it's so sad that we can't go right now. Yeah. So that's actually what helped get him out of it, but whew.

Shanna

So smart using the Dr. Becky techniques. Oh, 100%. Yeah, 100%. Yeah, it does. It really does help to acknowledge the feelings instead of talking logically with them when they're young, especially.

Laura

Yeah. I mean, for everyone, though, like if you were crying about wanting to do something and I was like, but Shanna, you can't do it right now because we have to record a podcast. Like, is that going to make it better? It's not. I'd be like, oh, yeah, that hurts. I don't know. It just goes for everyone.

Shanna

Yeah well just last night I was trying to post something to Instagram stories and like oh my gosh sometimes I just have like the worst time with Instagram like things text disappears and I have to redo everything and I'm next to Steve on the couch for Steve I'm just like oh my god Instagram! And all I wanted was for him to be like, honey, Instagram sucks, doesn't it? You're so mad about Instagram, aren't you? You know, I really, really was craving that validation. So I get it.

Laura

I think didn't I give you that validation? I texted you and I was like, I hate Instagram too. Vent away. Yes.

Shanna

Yes. Yes. Clearly I'm venting to everyone about Instagram. Yes.

Laura

We should have mentioned we don't hate Instagram necessarily as a platform. It's just when you try to make a freaking reel, they make it so hard. They make it so hard.

Shanna

Yeah, I feel like there's a lot of bugs and stuff that make things tricky.

Laura

Very buggy. Very buggy. But anyway, he did eventually get over it. The problem is now, if you mentioned Disneyland, it kind of starts happening every time. I want to go now. It's like, I think we must be in a phase where he doesn't really still get future planning, you know? Right. It's like everything's immediate. It's tricky, it's tricky.

Shanna

Well, I think the takeaway here is that you need to go to Disneyland now with him.

Laura

Now. There was a moment, this has happened multiple times, right? So like there was a time, it wasn't as bad as the first time, but there was a time like a Saturday at 11 or something, he was like, I want to go to Disneyland now. And I was like, maybe we should, maybe we should just go to Disneyland now. But I did not give in, so.

Shanna

That's good.

Laura

Anywho, Shanna, do you have another reason why a child is crying?

Shanna

I have one more. Should we come back with it after the break? Oh, good idea.

Laura

Okay, we are back and Shanna has one more scenario to share with us about why her child was crying. Shanna, who was it? Where was it? Tell us everything about it.

Shanna

This involved Elle and it was pretty recent and it was in our backyard.

Laura

Okay, L was in the backyard trying to master a round off because she's super into tumbling right now. And I think she's got her cartwheel down, but the round off is just eluding her and she's doing it over and over and over and she can't. So she's so frustrated she started crying.

Shanna

Oh, okay. Very appropriate to what she does in her life. But no, no. Okay, here's the situation. I've gotten very bad at yard maintenance lately. Like I, I don't know. It rained a lot and like for some reason our property is just like the graveyard of weed seeds down there or something like when it rains like the entire yard pops up with dandelions and weeds and all kinds of stuff. And in the backyard there's some incredibly hardy dandelion plants that shoot up. And they've been there for a while to the point that We were playing in the backyard with the girls and I'm just like distracted by all of these huge weeds up in our bank area. I'm talking like two to three feet tall like dandelion plants and I'm like I just gotta like at least pick some of these. I can't let them continue to propagate in my yard.

So I go over and I pull this three foot tall dandelion plant out of the ground and I'm grumbling about how many weeds there are in our yard. I'm just like, ugh, too many weeds. And I go throw it away. Two minutes later, I come back from the green bin on the side of the yard and Elle is crying. And I had absolutely no clue why she would be crying. None. None. She wasn't practicing tricky moves. She wasn't doing anything. And I am like, what is what happened? Are you okay, honey? And through tears, she looks at me and she goes, you called that down to lion. Oh, we

Laura

Oh, sweetie. She is so sensitive. It's so sweet. I know.

Shanna

She's so sensitive. I mean, yeah, this is the child who cried when we got rid of our old entertainment center. She really gets attachments to things. And I get it in the front yard when the dandelions come up. They get cute, because they get the little puffy ball and you can blow them and whatever. She loves those. But this wasn't like that. But I guess she just really has an attachment to dandelions and didn't realize it was a weed and got so sad when I called it that, like I was calling it a really bad name.

Laura

Oh my goodness, you slurred that dandelion. Yes, I slandered it. Yes, you did. Oh my goodness. Okay, so did this dampen your enthusiasm for getting rid of the other dandelions in your backyard?

Shanna

Kind of. I let the rest of them be for a while and like, oh my gosh, the rains recently, our entire front yard just exploded with them to the point where it's like, oh, we need to like kind of mow our lawn. And I felt bad mowing our lawn of vandalines because I'm like, she's going to think we're murdering all of these little plants. But you know, we did mow. You know, you can't, you can't change up your life too much based on your kid's feelings.

Laura

Well, I mean, I remember once, cause Cory's not a gardener, right? And so like earlier in our home ownership journey, I said something like, ah, you know, we gotta go outside and pull some of these weeds. And he was like, what even is a weed? And I was like, you know, good point, good question. I mean, technically it's just a plant you don't want there. Like there's no definition of it, right? Like, dandelions could be wanted, I suppose, because you can eat dandelions, right? Like you eat the greens. So like you might be cultivating dandelions. It's so funny the other day with all these rains, there's like you said, weeds everywhere. And I was walking in my neighborhood and I saw a woman in like a little bit of the strip, you know, the parkway between the street and the sidewalk. And she was just gathering up weeds and putting them in a shopping bag.

And I was like, and she was an older woman. And I was like, OK, I know this behavior. This is like foraging she's doing. I'm like, this is where I'm headed in my life 100%, like foraging for wild food. But I was like, I have no idea what this stuff is that she's gathering. I always just assumed it was a weed. But it turns out it was something called cheese weed, which is apparently delicious in salads. And I had to figure that out through my like iNaturalist app or whatever.

Shanna

I don't know that I would eat cheese weed from a parkway though because we all know that parkways are where all the dogs whiz.

Laura

In my neighborhood especially we have a ton of foot traffic so I was like I don't know if I would gather it from there but more power to her. Maybe she has a really great cleaning method. Maybe. When I first planted a bunch of my native plants in my front yard, a couple months later, after a bunch of rains, some morel mushrooms popped out of them, like out of the base of them. They must have had some spores from the nursery or whatever. And I showed my brother, because my brother is a big mushroom forager, and he was so excited. He was like, oh my god, you have to eat those. Those are so great. And I was like, eh. Do you know how many dogs walk by and pee on this spot? Like, I'm no thank you. Yeah. Pass. So anyway, to go back to my point, like a weed is an arbitrary. Subjective. Yes, it's subjective. So.

So maybe you can get L to start forging for the dandelions in your backyard because that would achieve two things. One is she would feel like, oh, I'm doing something and I'm using my dandelions. I love so much. But then they would also be, you know, gone.

Shanna

I like the way you think. I like it. Very smart, very smart. All right. Well, that's it for me. And I think that's it for our segment. Shall we move on to our BFPs and BFNs? Yes, we should.

Laura

Okay, so we close every episode with a Big Fat Positive or a big fat negative from the week. Shanna, BFP or BFN?

Shanna

I have a BFN.

We went to CECE's five year pediatrician checkup recently and it was great. Things were going great. Everything was checking out. And then the doctor looked at her blood pressure numbers and was like, oh, her blood pressure is high. Hmm. And I was like, oh. Okay. It literally never crossed my mind that a kid could have high blood pressure, but I guess they could because that's why they check it every time, right? I was like, oh, all right. And she's like, I'm going to have the nurse come back in and check it again after I leave. If it's high at the end of the appointment, I want you to come back in a month so we can do a follow-up. And I'm like, okay, I'm sure it'll be fine at the end of the appointment. Maybe she was just jazzed up about getting, you know, B in there and L was there too. And they were just kind of riling each other up.

The nurse comes in at the end and puts a little cuff on her and it was still high. it. So I had to make an appointment for a month in advance to come back and check her blood pressure. And of course, in the meantime, I'm like, Shanna, don't Google this. Don't don't worry about this. Don't don't think about what this could mean. But I did, of course, and you know, found out this kids can have high blood pressure and they might need to be on I don't know, blood pressure medication and all this stuff. And I'm like, stop, stop. Just wait. Just like, let's see what happens at the end of this month. And a month did pass and we went back to check her blood pressure again. And we go in and they bring in the little vitals cart, which is, you know, what they used last time to check her blood pressure. They put this tiny, tiny little cuff on her arm and check it. And the nurse was like, hmm.

And I was like, oh my God, are you kidding me? It's still high. So she switched out this tiny cuff and put like a little bit bigger cuff on and checked it again. And I was like, hmm, I don't know. Let me, I'll be right back. I'm like, oh my gosh. Like I'm starting to like worry at this point, you know? So she left and someone else came in the room. I think it's like the registered nurse of the office. And he's like, okay, here's what the doctor wants to do. She wants me to take her blood pressure again a couple of times and just double check it. And if it's okay, You're fine. If not, let's, you know, we'll bring the doctor in and you can see her. I was like, okay. But this time he used that like blood pressure machine that's on the wall, you know, it's like a big circle and it's got like the odometer, whatever meter. Sphygmomometer. Oh my God. You just busted that word out so fast.

Laura

Do you know that word? Uh, yeah, I learned a lot of Geeky things as the kid of two doctors. I'm pretty sure I said that right. Let me Google it spig spig mom mom neater I think it's spig mom mom now. I can't say spig mom a nomader. Let me double check spig Yes, it's a Sphygmomanometer, also known as blood pressure monitor. It's no surprise people don't use that word a lot. How many letters is that? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 letter word.

Shanna

Wow. And lots of syllables. Fascinating. Okay. Well, no one ever really uses that anymore. It seems to me they use this little electronic vitals cart thing. So he brought out the big guns. He's like, all right, let's use this wall machine and put the little cuff on her and did it once. And then he had to do it again. I'm like, oh my God, what is good? And I am not medically literate. I don't know what a good or bad blood pressure is for a five-year-old. But I did see him take the tiny cuff off and put it on a bigger one. So I don't know if cuff size has something to do with it. And he took it again, put his little stethoscope, you know, on the inside of her elbow, did it the old fashioned way. And I'm sitting there on pins and needles like, oh my word, do I have a kid with high blood pressure? And why? And what am I doing wrong? And what's wrong with me as a mom and blah, blah, blah.

And then the blood pressure test is over and he's like, okay. uh looks good 80 over 60 or whatever like nice low normal blood pressure is like you're good to go doctor doesn't need to come in you're all good i was like okay are you sure are you sure are you sure he's like yeah it's all good i'm like okay meanwhile your blood pressure is through the roof exactly so yeah i mean it turned into a bfp obviously because everything was fine in the end but whoo that journey i was getting really worried

Laura

Yeah, you know something my dad used to always tell me was you can't trust one blood pressure reading you have to have a blood pressure reading like three or four over the course of a couple hours or days if you want to really know because your blood pressure can fluctuate so much depending on stuff like how you're sitting. or just like how elevated your arm is compared to your head. He had multiple sphing momentometers at home because he had all the home devices. And I remember one time being at his house and he was like, oh, let me show you. He's like, hold your hand like this. Okay. Now hold your hand like this. See how different it is. Because he was an anesthesiologist. So it was very important to know blood pressure, obviously. And he's like, it changes on a dime. You have to get like an average over time to really know. So.

Shanna

That is so interesting. And it puts in a perspective when I went to the doctor recently, I was sick for a little bit and they did my blood pressure and it was really high for me. You know, it's like 140 over something. So it's really high for me. And I was like, to the doctor, I was like, so do you think it's high? Cause I took a mucinex D today. Like I, you know, took some amphetamine, pseudofedia. He's like, yeah, that's probably it.

Laura

I was like, oh, okay, okay. The other thing I always think about is something that I think the Milk Minute podcast taught me. It has to do with breastfeeding stuff, but I remember it for everything now, which is how soon does your pediatrician watch you back? They talk about it in relation to feeding stuff, right? If your pediatrician says, oh, I'd like your baby to be drinking, more breast milk, you know, they're not gaining enough weight. And I'll see you in a month for like a newborn. They're not actually that worried because if they were actually worried they'd have you back in a week or less, right? Because if they're really worried about the weight gain, they're not going to sit around for a month and wait for you to come back.

Shanna

Oh my God, that's so true. And Cece was going through that. I think I was going back like every two days in the beginning.

Laura

Yeah. Yeah. So like the fact that your pediatrician was like, I'll see you in a month. You know what I mean? They're not worried about anything super critical in that situation.

Shanna

Okay. Okay. That's a good reminder. Thanks, friend.

Laura

Yeah. Yeah. Well, I'm glad she's okay. Maybe she saw B'day right before she got her first blood pressure meeting taken.

Shanna

Or just having a flashback memory of that. That's probably it. All right. So what do you have for us? You have a BFP or BFN?

Laura

I have a BFP. Okay. What is it? It's a BFP for my kids, which means it's a BFP for me, even though I think it's more of like a BF, like whatever, which is the new movie Wonka with Timothy Chalamet.

Shanna

Yes, I tried watching that at home. I found it very boring. I have to say, I did not finish it. OK, so I'm curious about your take on it.

Laura

I have also never finished it. Okay. Interesting. Apologies to anyone who likes it. Everyone has different tastes. Everyone has different interests. This is not to say you don't have good taste. It's just for me, I find it boring. I do not like it. My children, on the other hand, love it, Shanna. Love it.

Shanna

Aw, well, that's cute.

Laura

Yes. And why it's my BFP, because they like a lot of media. They also love Minecraft walkthroughs, and that's not my BFP. But the reason why this is my BFP is, first of all, it's a movie. You can put it on. You don't have to keep changing it. I mean, like, my kids are finally into Bluey, which I love, but Augie always wants to pick the episode. And so every five to eight minutes, he's like, let me pick a new episode. And I'm like, just let it autoplay. Yeah, too much interaction. So Wonka, you turn it on. It's a movie. And it has fun music. At first I was like, this music is whatever, it's okay. But it's kind of grown on me because the kids have been playing it in the car like constantly. And it's kind of fun. It's got cute music.

So I highly recommend it if you are sick of just TV shows or YouTube and you want something different and you want something that can kind of like translate to listening to music because we listen to the soundtrack in the car a lot and both kids like it. That's a big win, right? They both want to listen to Wonka in the car. That's nice. I believe it's on HBO Max streaming as of this recording. The other thing I will say is it's so cute because there's this recurring song where it's like, it's Wonka's buy my chocolate song basically. It's like, get yourself some Wonka chocolate. Every time now, Sebastian gets chocolate. We have some leftover from St. Patrick's Day. And he'll grab a piece and I hear him going, get yourself some.

Shanna

It's so cute. That is really cute. My kids haven't watched that movie. I was such a huge fan of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the book and the original movie when I was a kid. I mean, I watched that movie over and over and over. So it was a hard sell for me to get into this new one, right? But here's my question. Should I show the original to my kids? Or is it a little problematic that the children like keep disappearing and like whatever from the factory, where do we stand on that?

Laura

So Corey and I have had this exact discussion because we much prefer the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, right? The one from was it the 70s, 80s? I think it was still 70s, right? with Gene Wilder, right? Yes. Classic. Yeah, there are some problematic things. Like I think the Oompa Loompas, I don't know, I haven't read a think piece about it, but my suspicion is that there's not the best, right? And then all the kids disappearing and getting essentially killed in the chocolate factory, as far as I can tell. The little sketchy. So we decided not to show it to the kids yet. Our kids are younger than your kids, right? So, you know, Augie might be able to handle it. Definitely not Sebastian. So maybe CeCe would be okay with it. I think Elle probably, well, Elle's very sensitive though. And there is that boat ride they take. Oh, the psychedelic boat ride.

Shanna

That's right. That could be frightening.

Laura

That's scary. Like I remember that being super scary. So I don't know. I think This is the more PG version for now. All right, all right. But yeah, that's it for me. And I think that's it for our show. I think it is. Unless you have a five-star review to read, Shada.

Shanna

Oh, I do, because our listeners are the best. All right, this is from HNT108 on Apple Podcasts. The title is A Must Listen for Pregnancy and Parenting Five Stars. I started listening to BFP at the beginning of my pregnancy and loved the weekly format. I listened every morning during my hour-long commute. I truly believe that my fetus got used to hearing Shanna and Laura's voices. So after she was born, anytime we rode in the car, she'd immediately fall asleep when I turned on BFP. Not only do I love the relatability and great advice, but they are also to thank for my long commutes-to-day care going smoothly with a sleeping baby. Keep up the amazing work. Aw, thank you! Thank you, and you're welcome.

Laura

You're welcome! We plant, yeah, what can we say? But yes, thank you so much for that review. We love it. We love hearing that all these babies recognize our voice. We should do like a test. We should try to do a meetup. and then talk and see if the kids recognize us.

Shanna

I just imagine all these little babies crawling towards us. And I love that. I love that. Absolute dream. Yes. Yes. All right. Well, thank you so much. And listeners, if you haven't had a chance yet to leave us a five star review, could you please do us a favor and head on over to Apple Podcasts. Leave five stars and say a few things you love about the show and we might read it on an upcoming episode. If you have any, why is my kid crying that you want to share for us or any other thoughts or feedback on this week's episode? You know we would love to hear from you. Laura, where can everyone find us?

Laura

We are on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook at BFP Podcast. We have a website, bigfatpositivepodcast.com. And if you want to send us an email, you can always throw a voice memo in there. We love those.
