Laura

Welcome to Big Fat Positive with Shanna and Laura. This week, we have our weekly check-ins. We have our special segment. They said what? Well, we discussed some weird things people have said to us about snacks, snips, and shadows, and we closed with our BFPs and BFNs for the week. Let's get started. Hi, everyone. Welcome to the show. This is episode 210. Hello, Shanna. Hi. Let's get straight to it. I want to know what's going on with you guys. You're in summer now. That L is out of school, so. Yes. So tell me, how's it going? What have you guys been up to?

Shanna

Well, I feel very happy this week because Cece is back at school. So she had a week she missed because she was sick the entire week. And then her school took like a summer week off, which is fun. We've talked about that before. Yeah. So there was two weeks where she was at home and I love my baby, but it's great when she's in school because she's like occupied all day and I can focus on work and she just like comes home happier You know because she gets a little rest at school and it's just she's been very pleasant to be around lately Which is good. Yeah. It's awesome because she's been so clingy and, you know, sick and it's just she's been having a hard time. So she's very happy these days and it's so cute because it's translating into being very chatty and just like just talking my ear off about stuff. And I love that.

I just love like talking to her and listening, especially like at bedtime, you know, after we turn off the light and we're like laying there and she's just like, Blah, blah, blah, blah, talking, talking. The other night, here's the conversation we had randomly. She's like, mama. Remember when Chili was really old and really sick and he died? Chili was our dog, remember? I know. I'm like, yeah, I remember. And she's like, and now we have one dog. And one day Sasha will get really old and really sick and she'll die. And I'm like, yeah, she will. You know, starting to feel like sad and everything. She's like, then we'll get a golden retriever and name it Sandwich. Like, oh, he will. OK. She's got plans. She has plans. Her little brain is just the wheels are turning. She's on fire. She's got plans. And yeah, she's telling me all about it these days.

Laura

So how did you crush your dreams until that golden retriever is happening?

Shanna

I was like, we'll get a miniature Havanese and name it Sandwich or something like that. I'm a little dog person. But I don't know. Everyone in my family wants a big dog, Laura, except me. So I don't know. At some point, I might be outnumbered on that one.

Laura

Well, I think if you go big, just go really big. Just get a great dane, you know? Oh, God. I hear they're like good, calm dogs, so why not? I've heard the same thing. They're like lap dogs, basically.

Shanna

Yeah, like 200 pound lap dogs, maybe not 200, but yeah. So my kids are very obsessed with golden retrievers and they really want a golden retriever. And apparently she wants to name it sandwich.

Oh, which is cute. I don't know. We'll see. So funny. Yeah. And then along with that, you know, with her little wheels turning inside her brain, she's really diving deep into the Y phase, which I know Augie entered a while back. But Sisi's really into it now. And it's just like so funny because I don't know if Augie does this too, but like she just asks why about the most like random things that literally don't have answers. I'm just like, like we're reading a book and she points to a character that's a mouse. And she's like, why is he a mouse? I'm like, I don't, because he is. I don't know. He's just, I don't know. Or like, like a letter book, you know? It's like, why is that A? I'm like, because it's A. There's no answer. She's not like, why is the sky blue or anything deep? Like, there's just like, why is that a mouse? I don't know, kid. I'm sorry. Mama's no help.

Laura

I like to blame others. So, like, Augie will say stuff like that. Like, why? Yeah. Like, I'm just going to use that as an example because I can't think of another one. But why is that a mouse? And I'll be like, well, because the author decided a mouse was a good choice here.

Shanna

Yeah, that's a good way to go. She definitely gets a lot of, hmm, I'm not sure. I say that all the time. I'm not sure. I don't know. But that doesn't stop her. She's asking about everything. And it's cute. So yeah, we've had a great week together, and things are just good. So yeah, that's pretty much my check-in. Fun. Yeah. What about you? How are things going over there?

Laura

Well, we've had a less fun week. No. Sad to report. Sorry. Yeah. Nothing huge. It's just that everything's, well, I mean, it's nothing huge. It's just like a general crabbiness sort of all around in the house. And the root cause is like lack of sleep for everyone.

Shanna

Right.

Laura

So, you know how you say, like the days that Cici's at preschool, she's like so much happier because she comes home and she's rested. Well, we're kind of having an inverse problem, which is the days that Augie goes to school. He's well rested at school because he naps for that hour that we are capping it out now. And I mean, he's like still napping every day at school. But then he comes home and he doesn't want to go to sleep, Shanna. Oh, no. And he drags bedtime out. Like he's dragging it out to like nine, nine thirty these days.

No, but he won't let us leave the room like it's not like he's just reading his books or whatever until nine like no if we leave the room he screams his head off and then we're worried that it's gonna wake up Sebastian so like right Corey and I have to alternate who stays in his room and like we have to stay there till after he falls asleep like we've gotten to this terrible pattern of of having to be right next to him as he falls asleep. Originally, we never wanted to do that, but somehow it got started that we would tell him stories till he fell asleep. It just morphed into this like we have to sit next to him until he falls asleep or he wakes up and screams.

It's just sucking the life out of us because we get no, like, alone time. You know, we get no adult time after there's no bedtime to be after. Like by the time, you know, if it's my night with Augie and I'm in there till nine, then I'm like dream feeding Sebastian at like 930 because I want to get to bed by 10 because then Augie is like also been waking up in the middle of the night. Because he's like, I don't know if he's overtired, undetired. I don't know. But he's waking up at like 2 a.m., calling for us. You know, it's probably startled because we were in there when he fell asleep and now we aren't. So like, oh, right. And then his screaming wakes up Sebastian and he gets woken up and it's just like all around a vicious cycle. And then on top of that Sebastian who's 16 months is finally getting his molars. Oh no. Good timing kid.

He's been so fussy like just so fussy and opinionated about things and like I thought something was up like I just could be like what is going on with you and then one day when he like didn't want me to pick him up he threw his head back in protest you know the way they do and I got a clear view and I could see his poor like the back of his gums were all like red and inflamed and there was like one little piece of tooth poking through. I was like, oh, buddy. So I think we're in for it for a while because of the molar situation, and we're all just really tired.

Shanna

Sounds like it. It's so shocking to me how bad three years old is for sleep. Like I, it's just like I went through this before with L, right? But clearly I forgot and it blindsided me again with CECE and you're having the same problem. And so many moms and my mom's group have this problem at three years old specifically. It's so. Strange and so unfair like after all the work we've put into getting these kids to sleep Well now it's just like it all gets crazy.

Laura

It must be their growing brains You know like there they can understand so much more now It's not like you just like be like bye see ya and like let them put themselves to sleep without them going through every why scenario in their little brains When you leave why did mommy leave me? Why am I alone in this dark room? Yeah So yeah, you know, I don't know if I've mentioned this before. I bought a Dr. Becky sleep course, but we have not watched it yet because we don't have time. Oh my god, you need to do that clearly ASAP. That's your homework for the week. I know, but the problem is like, when do we watch it?

We have no free time. I think Cory and I are going to have to watch them separately, because I keep waiting to have a time where we can sit down and watch it together so we can be on the same page, but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen. Hopefully, I'll get to that soon, but woof.

It's a challenge right now, but he's cute. He is. I'll talk about the cute stuff he's doing in the next segment to sort of balance it out. But the real life check-in right now is that we're still tired and I keep talking about trying to do something to fix Augie's sleep and haven't done it yet. So get to it. Check back in next week.

Shanna

Until then, shall we take a break and come back with our special segment?

Laura

Yeah, let's do it.

Shanna

We're back and this week's special segment is, they said, what? One of our favorite segments where we report on the hilarious, possibly offensive, outrageous things that people have said to us recently. Laura, you're up first. I'm dying to hear your first, they said, what? Okay, so all of mine are from my immediate family.

Laura

This is an in the household segment for me. So I'm going to start with Corey. So Corey saw me unpacking some stuff I bought from the drugstore, looked at it and said, what are those for? In a very terrified voice. Okay. And he was referring to some prenatal vitamins I just bought.

Shanna

Did he have a moment of thinking you guys were going to expand your family? Yeah, he was terrified.

Laura

Like he was like, what are those for? Why did you buy those? So freaked out. And I was like, oh, no, poor guy. Yeah. And I just had to tell him that there had been a good deal on them. And all this time I've supposed to have been taking vitamins, like specifically prenatal vitamins. They tell you to just keep taking them when you're breastfeeding. And I haven't done that so much. I'm not very good at remembering. So I got some vitamins and he thought it meant something else. So yeah. And so how did you react to him saying that? A very quick reassurance because I, you know, after not sleeping all week and like having this very opinionated toddler, the last thing I need is to add an infant newborn to this crew. So I was like, no, no, no, no, no, don't worry. Don't worry. It's nothing. Oh my god.

Shanna

So do you think that he was thinking that you're already pregnant and you just haven't told him or like that you had plans to get ready to get pregnant?

Laura

That is a good question. I don't know.

Shanna

I bet he thought you were already pregnant. You're probably right. You're probably right. Oh, she has the IUD, blah, blah. He's probably just like, oh my god, she's pregnant and she hasn't told me.

Laura

This is how I tell them I just leave prenatal vitamins on like the dining table Surprise I'm sure someone's done that. I'm sure there's some reveal video on Facebook. You can find be like prenatal vitamins Yeah, but no I just I was starting to feel a little like extra tired I mean there's obvious reasons I'm tired, but I was just like you know what maybe I do need some vitamins and minerals in my life Yeah So yeah, nothing to be concerned about Corey.

Shanna

Poor Corey.

Laura

All right. So what's your first they said what?

Shanna

All right. So I was at Trader Joe's grocery shopping the other day, as you do, and just packing the cart full. I mean, this happens all the time at Trader Joe's. And a lot of what I buy nowadays are things for the kids to munch on, right? Because it is relentless, the begging for snacks. And so I'm ringing up at the register. The cashier is very nice. You know how Trader Joe's employees always very friendly and tried to start a conversation with you, et cetera. Very friendly. And she is ringing up my stuff and it's like bag of nuts, another bag of nuts, another bag of nuts, crackers, more crackers, you know, like cheese puffs, more cheese puffs, other other chips, just all this stuff. And she turns to me, she goes, Oh, do you like to snack a lot? I was just like.

I was just like, no, it's for my kids. I am not personally eating 16 bags of nuts and cheese puffs and fruit leathers and all this stuff. It didn't offend me, but it was just such a weird comment. like really caught me off guard. And like, why say that? I don't know. It's just so weird, like not like, Oh, I like this flavor of nuts or whatever, you know, a lot of the cashiers there will be like, Oh, I love this product. That's how they start the conversation. She didn't do any of that. It was just like ringing up all my shit. And then like, Oh, you must like to snack a lot.

Laura

You must like to breathe. Yeah. It's also just like, I feel like you have to tread really lightly with comments about food in general, because it's just like, I don't know, I guess they spend all day having to make small talk and they probably misstep sometimes. But how many moms come through Trader Joe's every day? Like you can't smell a mom from like a mile away, just like based on what's in her cart, you know?

Shanna

Yeah, it's so funny to me. This person's mind went to like, this woman is shopping for herself, herself alone, $300 worth of snacks. It's just so funny. And then another day, like the next time I went, I got so much food. I mean, we were really low on food and This is embarrassing, but I spent like $450 on groceries that day. It was bananas. Like I stocked up on everything. Groceries are really expensive right now though. They are. That's the other thing. Prices have gone way up, yeah. I feel like two years ago that would have been like $200 worth of groceries. So yeah, it is wild, but I did get a lot of stuff and the cashier was a young, like 19 year old guy and he was just like looking at everything that I had and watching the price go up. How long is this going to last you? Probably three days, sir. Exactly. It was like a week. I don't know. Oh my gosh. Oh my God.

People commenting on my food. That's why I like self-check out. I mean, I like human interaction, but I also like to just go bring up my snacks and my $3,000 worth of groceries by myself.

Laura

This reminds me of one time when I was in college and I went to like the fancy grocery store in Portland. It's like, I don't remember what it was called, but maybe it was new seasons, but it was like gelsins or like, you know, fancier than Whole Foods. And I went there to like get something like a card and some flowers. And I remember being like, ooh, I'm going to be spending $20 on this stuff, but it's worth it. It was like a good friend's birthday. Mm-hmm and I was behind a person and there were lots of people in line right like it was really busy and I was running late and I spotted the line with just like one person in front with like one I was like, great. So like I got behind the person who had the one thing to buy and it was just a little tin and they ring this person up and they're like, okay, that'll be $350. I was like, what the fuck? And I realized it was caviar.

Like they were buying like a little tin of caviar. Oh my gosh. But I just remember being like, wow. This is how people live.

Shanna

Wow. Living that champagne lifestyle. That, yeah, that blows my mind to have $350 to spend on a tiny tin of caviar.

Laura

Well, I mean, it's all relative, right? Like, I know that being able to buy snacks and stuff is, you know, like certain things that even just like a bottle of wine can be an extravagance to someone else. So like, it's all relative. And I guess if you have the money to buy caviar, Yes, go for it. I just remember being so shocked because I'd never heard of like one thing ringing up.

Shanna

Especially at a grocery store, right?

Laura

It's like, wow. Yeah. But I wanted that guy to be like, how long is this going to last you?

That's amazing.

Shanna

All right. So do you have another they said what for us?

Laura

I do. I do. Okay. So I wanted to redeem my sort of negative check in with some cuteness from the little toddler, Sebastian. I have a voice memo actually. So this is a voice memo. They said what? Sweet. It's a new thing that he's gotten really into. So I'm going to send it to you. Okay. So I sent it over. Okay. Here we go. Do you want to go to bed? No. Do you want to... Do you want to go to sleep? No. No? Do you want to... Go. Do you want to get a job?

Yeah. You do?

Do you want to stop playing? No. No. Do you want to get your jammies on? No. No. Do you want to play with that track?

Shanna

He doesn't want to do any of those things except get a job.

Laura

Except get a job. But that actually wasn't the best voice memo. He was a little distracted by the act of recording the voice memo as always. But his new thing is no, no. This is the new they said what they mean little Sebastian. Everything is no.

At least he's cute about it. It's the cutest. The problem is like, I can't not laugh. So like something was happening the other day. We were trying to convince the kids to go up to bath time or something. And I was like, baby, it's time to get your clothes off. And he's like, no. And I just laugh so hard because it's so cute. And Corey was like, you know, if you didn't laugh every time, you might not say it so much. I was like, but it's so cute.

Shanna

It is really cute.

Laura

I think you might have seen a video that I posted to Facebook of him like refusing to chill out at bedtime. Uh-huh.

Shanna

Oh, yeah.

Laura

Him with some very assertive nose there.

Shanna

Yeah, his nose was on fire. He likes to say no, definitely. And you were laughing a lot. Oh, yeah. So you were definitely encouraging the adorable no. Yeah, because he has great comedic timing.

Laura

Here, let me play it for the listener so they can hear.

All right sweetie, you know it's not so bad.

So yeah, there you go. Cute defiance. Yes, I love it. The other thing he's doing is he hasn't quite mastered yes or yeah or anything really. So like he says no when he means yeah sometimes. Oh, okay. It's interesting. quite grasped that they're two different words like he's kind of doing the same thing with mama and dad dad like I think he thinks of mama as like parent in a way so like when he hears Corey he'll go mama in like a different tone than what he says for me so it's like I can tell that they're different but like they're sound the same to everyone else but like I'll be like Baby, do you want some food? And he'll go, no. But like the way he says it, I'm like, that's a yes, no, isn't it? Like that's a no yes.

Shanna

That's confusing. But yeah, I can see how he thinks that's just an answer to the question.

Laura

Like that's how he thinks of that word. Exactly. But yeah, but it's cute. And I don't mind it so much because he's still a baby and I can just pick him up. So even if he says no a million times, I can, you know, override him over.

All right, what's your next they said what?

Shanna

Okay, so this one happened at the beach or walking toward the beach recently. I was with the girls and I had their wagon. They were in the wagon and you know, I've got my beach bag, my beach tent and I know I did. They said, what about beach stuff last year? I think I was kind of getting some shade for like having so much stuff and having a kid in the wagon and all that jazz. Okay, let me say that is bit on my mind. I have pared down my beach hall. Okay. This is wasn't even like that much. There was like no cooler involved. I didn't even bring sand toys. Like it was the kids, the beach bag, the tent, some towels, whatever. And so I'm pulling the kids and I had to cross like the PCH to get to the other side, like where the beach is.

Laura

The Pacific Coast Highway for those who are not familiar.

Shanna

Yeah, exactly. And as we're crossing the street, I'm crossing at a stop sign. Cars are stopping. And as we're crossing two bikers, like serious type bikers, like, you know, like the full-on bike shorts, helmet, cleats, what do they call them? I don't know, the kind of shoes that lock into the pedal. Like a serious biker, not a beach cruiser type. It almost seemed like they didn't want to stop at that stop sign. It seemed like they just thought that they could keep going because they're bikers, but we stepped out into the crosswalk right as they were about to do it. So it kind of forced them to stop. And so I don't know if they were mad about that or what, but This biker looked at his friend in full volume in front of me and was like, they are lugging all that shit down there. Oh my god. Why can't people leave me alone?

Laura

What is it about men and their fucking opinions about how much shit you have in your wagon? Like who cares?

Shanna

Who cares? Also, everybody with families brings that much shit to the beach. Like we were not the only people down there with tents and wagons. I was just like, I'm sorry that you live near the beach and can just like jaunt down there whenever and sit on, I don't know, a kitchen towel. And that's it, you know, to keep your butt off the sand and enjoy the beach. I need to be prepared. And I was livid. First of all, I could tell the arrogance. I knew they wanted to blend that stop sign. And we made him stop. And that pissed him off. And then he had to make some comment. And so that angered me that he wanted to break the rules anyway. And then saying that about that. And I'm already sensitive because someone commented on it last year. And I'm just like, why am I such a bad person? Because I try to come prepared to the beach with two small children.

Laura

Well also like these people clearly don't remember what it's like to have small children or they never knew because it's fucking like you need so much shit and like you get there and then you realize you don't have all the shit you need like you know what I mean like it's this thing where if you don't have the things you need it can really make an unpleasant trip out of the day you know you can like For example, I went to the beach recently to and I only brought one change of clothes for each kid. All right thought it was enough Turns out it wasn't so like Sebastian ended up wearing like Augie sweatpants

Like half the day it was cute but you know not super functional and I was nervous the whole time that he was gonna get like soaked in those again and then he would have nothing and he would have to leave because he'd be freezing because it was like the wind was blowing was actually kind of cold. Oh it was a cold beach day. It was a colder beach day. It's another thing like you can never know whether it's going to be a hot or a cold beach day if you're coming from inland because you never know if like the sun's going to be out or not. With the you know you think that you could look at the weather forecast and know but you can't because there's always like marine layers and fog and blah blah.

Shanna

And like, look, the amount of effort it takes to get my kids ready to go to a beach, I want to spend a significant amount of time down there. So I do want to bring a tent. I want to bring snacks. I want to make it comfortable for at least like two hours. So just going down there with nothing is just not going to fly. And I just really need grown men to stop commenting or anybody in general. But those are the people I get comments from.

Laura

Yeah. Well, you know why? Because they don't have to deal with it. You're not hearing it from other moms because they know. You're not hearing it from older women because they also know. You're just hearing it from men who probably either don't have kids or if they had kids, they probably had to rely on their female spouse to do all the work. And then they were like, having kids is easy. You just show up on weekends. Sorry, I'm going off here.

I know, I hear ya, I hear ya. Anyway, I think you should just add more. I think you should have two wagons, because fuck these guys.

Shanna

I'm going to build a double decker wagon, maybe a triple decker and just load every single level and just go all out. Triple decker wagon. I love it. Oh my God. Maybe that'll be my million dollar idea. Sell triple decker wagons to moms who want to go to the beach.

Anyway, that was good. I am glad I was able to get that off my chest. Thank you for validating my rage over that comment. I appreciate it. Anytime. Well, anyway, okay, so do you have another They Said What for us?

Laura

I do. And this one is a little spooky. You've had spooky They Said What's before. I know, and this one is also Augie. I feel like the- Uh-oh. I know, because I feel like my previous spooky they said what was like Augie staring at something, right? Like waving at someone? I can't even remember now.

Shanna

It was something about the house catching on fire or something.

Laura

Oh, there was that one, yeah. Halloween the house catches on fire. He was very insistent on that.

Shanna

So he's also had spooky ones where he stares.

Laura

I feel like as a toddler, remember he was like waving at something in the corner of the room and stuff. Well, on this same trend, the other morning when I went into his room in the morning and I said, Augie, how did you sleep? And he said, I was trying to sleep, but there was a shadow man staring at the door.

And I was like, huh?

I was like, what do you mean? Was there was a man in the room? No, it was a shadow man. And he kept staring at the door and wouldn't let me sleep. And I was like, okay, how did that make you feel? And he said, Bad because I wanted to sleep and he wouldn't let me sleep. Oh God Laura.

Shanna

I am getting chills. I am not into this I mean, you know, I'm into hearing the story But I'm not into shadow men being in your house staring at your child. What is happening?

Laura

Well, I was like so there was a man I kept pushing cuz I was like you saw a man You saw something that looked like a man. He's like no. No, it was a shadow man and So I'm like, I don't really know. Like he didn't seem scared. He said it just like wasn't letting him sleep. So I don't really understand what the issue, you know, like what he exactly was seeing. Yeah. Because I didn't want to like introduce the concept of like ghosts or monsters. So I was trying to let him describe it. And he's, you know, we've talked about how he has like fears about shadows and You know you get lots of weird shadows in the room also especially since he sleeps with like two night lights now So you get lots of weird shadows at night, right? But he didn't imply that it like what like when I was like it was a man He was very insistent.

No, it was a shadow man So I'm like maybe he just saw like a shadow that was shaped like a person's shadow. I don't know But yeah, that was definitely one of those moments where I was like

That's so creepy, but the thing is like I don't feel like this house is like for lack of a better word haunted like I don't know I've been in creepy feeling houses before And I have like a lot of weird stories about the house I grew up in and like I get like zero vibes from this house This makes me sound super weird, but like I don't know. I just feel like sometimes you go into a house and you're like, this feels weird. I don't get any from this house. So I don't know. It didn't make me feel that bad. Yeah, I don't know. It is an old house, though.

Shanna

It is an old house. It could be a friendly ghost. Yeah. So, you know, because he didn't seem necessarily scared by it, just observed, watched. Interesting. Well, I'm curious to see if he ever brings this up again or anything similar.

Laura

Me too. I'm not going to bring it up because I don't want to like plant any ideas. So we'll just see what happens. But I was definitely a little taken aback by that, did not expect that first thing in the morning.

Shanna

Oh, my gosh.

Laura

All right, what about you? What's your final? They said what?

Shanna

Okay, this happened at Elle's end of the year kindergarten park party that I talked about last week where I said like her class got together and had like a potluck and had the big slide. Huge, huge slide. So huge in fact that one of the kids' dads was like getting up there and playing with the kids and going down. Like it's big enough for an adult, right? And Steve arrived at the party after he finished the work and stuff and was hanging out. And that dad was like, come on, Steve, come on in. You know, this is a really fun loving dad. He's probably in his 20s, like very energetic and stuff. Really great guy. And Steve's just a little bit more like. I don't think I'm going to go play in that water with those kids today. But the guy kept pushing, right? He's like, come on, man, I got some swim trunks. I'll run upstairs. Because it was like in a park right next to this guy's condo.

Oh, I see. Yeah, he could run upstairs and grab Steve some. Swim Trunks, I should mention Steve was the only other dad there. It was all mom. So I think this guy really wanted to like connect with Steve and like, you know, dads on the slide and play with the kids and whatever. And Steve was like, oh, no thanks. Like, I'm all good. And the guy just kept pushing like, come on, that'll be fun. And truth be told, Steve had just recently gotten his vasectomy, right? So he had stitches and stuff. And like, In his mind, the last thing he wants to do is go into this water thing. It's like dirty water. The kids are like, it's like a pool at the bottom and it's just got dirt and grass. I don't even think he's supposed to submerge the stitches for a couple weeks or whatever. I just didn't want to do that. But he didn't directly want to tell this guy that, right? Yeah. No, it's OK.

I'm not going to go in. He kept pushing. So finally, Steve's like, I had a procedure recently. I really shouldn't be. getting in the water right now. And the dad was like, what? Like he couldn't hear him. They were kind of shouting because like the dad was over by his condo, like ready to get shorts, right? And Steve was over by the water slide. So they're kind of shouting this. And he's like, huh? Because he didn't hear him. He's like, what? And Elle is standing right there. And she goes, you know, she's like, I'm going to take matters into my own hands. Elle goes, my daddy has stitches in his penis.

Laura

Screamed this over in the middle of the party.

Shanna

I was like, oh my God, I love you so much. That is so hilarious. Steve's like, ugh. Yeah, man. Yeah. I have stitches in my penis, dude. I'm not going to get in that water. Sorry, dude. Did that shut it down? That did shut it down, yeah. Then they started talking about getting vasectomies.

Laura

I mean, Elle knows how to shut down a conversation, you know? She's like, you guys just need to admit what's going on. My daddy has stitches in his penis. Can you please stop pressuring him?

Shanna

Yeah, exactly. I love how she's just like, I'm going to step up and take care of this situation just straight to the point, loud as can be. And you know her, she's got that loud ass voice. My daddy has stitches in his penis. How did the adults react?

I don't know.

Laura

I don't even know if they noticed, but that's too funny. Oh my God.

Shanna

So great.

Laura

Anyway, so God, I love kids. They're so funny. Oh my goodness. All right. Well, that was a very fun segment. A little creepy, a little funny.

Shanna

Yeah.

Laura

But I think it's time to take a break and move on to our BFPs and BFNs. What do you think?

Shanna

Alrighty.

Laura

Okay, we are back and we close every show with a Big Fat Positive or a big fat negative from the week. Shanna, what do you got for us, BFP or BFN? I have a BFP.

Shanna

Yay. Yay. So my BFP is that Elle has a new hobby. And yeah, she has started making drawing tutorials for other kids. For YouTube. Oh, come on. It's so cute. I know. So it's something she's watched. You know, she watches stuff like that. She took art for a long time. She really loves drawing and stuff. And the other day she was just like, I want to make a drawing class for kids. And I was like, oh, okay, sure. And so I set up my phone and we got out a little paper and her drawing stuff. And it's so cute. I'll just send you a bit of it. Okay, she took this video of herself. It lasted like 18 minutes. Oh my God. It's taking up all the storage on my phone, right? Yeah. But it's awesome because she's so engaged. She's talking to the camera. She's drawing. It's taking up time. It's entertaining her. It's occupying her. So of course, I love it. I'm like, awesome.

Anyway, OK, so I sent you a snippet of her 18 minute video so you can get an idea of what this is like.

Laura

OK, here it is. Let me see.

Speaker 1

And I'm gonna be here, our teacher. I'm six and a half years old and I'm ready to draw with you. First, okay, we're drawing a cute little Donny. First, you go a little circle, then you can do floppy ears or maybe some rounded ears. This is what the circle's gonna look like. Got everyone? A little circle. You can do it big or small. And then you're gonna do pointy ears or you can do floppy ears any ear you want. Maybe you could do squiggly ears. Any choice. What do you like to do? Oh, I like that.

Laura

Oh my gosh, she's so funny with her like pausing to like ask people what they want to do and giving them different options. She's so cute. It's so, like, professional too.

Shanna

Yeah, I was, like, shocked at the ease at which she speaks to the camera. She's, like, looking right into the camera and talking as if a kid is on the other end. Yeah, she asks questions of the viewer. It's like, what do you think? What kind of ears do you want to do? Or, like, I'll give you a minute to draw those ears. And I'm just like, yeah. Have you gotten this skill? It like blew me away. So I watched it and I was like, well, yeah, I could start you a YouTube channel. Like, why not? Right? Like, let's put it up there. And I told our friend Jen about this and she's like, I don't know about putting your kids content out there. I'm like, yeah, maybe, maybe I'll just make it like a private channel, you know? So like, she can have a collection of her own tutorials. She can share the link with like friends or other kids and stuff.

Um, cause I don't know about putting it out there like publicly, but I do want to do something for her cause she's really into it. And I think it'd be really exciting for her if she saw herself on YouTube. Like that would be, wow.

Laura

Yeah. I mean, I think you can do like unlisted, right? And just share it with family and stuff. And we can all go make sure we make comments and stuff on it. So it looks like she's getting stuff. I agree. It's tough because like, you know, you want to encourage her to do it, but also like I could see her in 10 years being like, oh my God, I can't believe this is on the internet. Like, why did you let me put this on the internet? It's so embarrassing, you know? Yeah. So that's that's a tough one, but it is so cute. She's awesome. I mean, like her poise in front of the camera is incredible.

Shanna

Yeah. I think I might have cut out the very beginning on the video I sent you, but she started out like being like, I don't know, I'm kind of nervous. Like, I don't know what to say. And I was like, oh, you can just say like, hi, I'm Al. And then like, as soon as I gave her that one prompt, she like pushed me out of the way. And she's like, I got this. I was like, oh, yeah, you're real nervous, real nervous.

Laura

Oh my goodness. She's going to have her own podcast and YouTube channel, and she's going to eclipse us, Shanna. She is.

Shanna

She really is. Anyway, so it's cute to see her so engaged and interested, and I love it. So yeah, that's my BFP for the week. That's really fun. What do you got for us?

Laura

I also have a BFP. All right. And mine is a future BFP, but I'm very excited about it. Is it that baby that you're pregnant with that you're going to have with Corey? Surprise. No, it's not. As far as I know, I'm not pregnant unless I'm in some kind of like TLC. I didn't know I was pregnant situation. That is not the future plan. No, we made travel plans, Shanna. What? Where? We are going somewhere on a plane.

Shanna

Oh, wow, exciting.

Laura

We are going to go to Portland in July, the last week of July to go visit my mom and stepdad. We have not traveled anywhere by plane for three years, Shanna. Yeah, same. Augie's only been on a plane the one time he went to Portland to visit my mom when he was six months old and Sebastian's never been on a plane and I forget what it's like to travel and I'm traveling with two small kids so it should be interesting but... It's a quick flight. It's like a two-hour flight, no layovers or anything. So I'm not too nervous about it, but I am really, really excited to get out of Dodge for a little bit. Yes. How long are you guys going to be there? Just a week, Saturday to Saturday. And my brother and my sister-in-law are going to come too so that we get to see them. Because if you remember, for my 40th birthday, they had to cancel their trip because of COVID. So assuming none of us get COVID,

knock on wood as always. We will be seeing them. And yeah, it's just very exciting to imagine like going out of state have not done that. I haven't really been outside of, I guess we went to Fresno, but we haven't been outside of California. We haven't really just done anything that's just for fun. So the inspiration for this, of course, other than just my mom wanting us to visit was that Augie has his two week break from preschool the last week of July and the first week of August. So we are taking advantage of that.

Shanna

Going on a trip. That sounds so fun. Are there any fun kids things to do up there that you guys are planning to do?

Laura

Well, we have a lot of friends up there with kids. So it's actually going to probably just be like play date, Arama. Cory has some friends from, you know, college years that live up there. And then I have friends from college years that live up there. So we just, we have a lot of people to visit, basically. There are lots of fun kids things to do up there too, but I haven't even really looked into them because I figure we'll just be play dating it up. Seeing all these people we haven't seen in forever. Oh my gosh.

Shanna

That's so awesome. Yay. Is Augie excited to fly?

Laura

He is. He keeps talking about the plane. I don't think he quite gets it, what it's going to be like. But I think he's into it and he gets his own seat now that he's three.

Should be interesting. I'll be sure to tell you all about it when it happens. Yeah, cool, cool, cool. But yeah, that's it for me this week. Do you think we should read a five star review and get on out of here?

Shanna

Heck yeah. All right, I've got a five star review from Blue Luna 2019. The title of the review is by far my favorite podcast, Five Stars. Best pregnancy and parenting podcast. I started listening when I was pregnant with my first and have listened to all the episodes now. I just love how laid back and real Laura and Shanna are about their lives as parents. I can relate so much to them and always look forward to listening to the next episode. I'm currently pregnant with my second, so I plan on going back and listening from the beginning week by week along with my pregnancy. There's so many hacks, tips, tricks, advice that I've learned from these ladies. Thank you for such a great listen, Shanna and Laura. Aw, thank you and congratulations on your pregnancy!
